about

older tracks and random demos of previously orphaned songs that are now staring at you with their big, moisty eyes while they hold their arms out hoping you will pick them up.

about

the madlys Exeter, UK

the madlys are a studio project begun by Steve Greene - Dead Men Don't and Isis (a band, not a regime) - many years ago. various musicians have contributed along the way but the madlys is now a one man band.
indie, pop, rock, eclectronica, acoustic, whatever the framework the aim is always the same: to write and record songs with substance and lyrics that hopefully mean something.

Track Name: get close
All I’m trying to do
Is get close to you sometime.
But you keep brushing me off
And knocking me back tonight.
Am I never gonna get it right?
All I’m trying to do is get close to you.

I’m not gonna give up,
I believe in this love we’ve got.
You might not think it’s enough
But I want it too much to stop.
Are we ever gonna keep in touch?
I’m not gonna give up,
I believe in this love.

You make me feel crazy
To still be here waiting.
Track Name: over and over again
Over and over again.

Mountains fall and water rises,
People carry on,
Never too concerned
With why the world goes wrong.
You were once a part of me,
Did we meet here before?
If you have got the heart
Let’s do it all once more.

Over and over again.

A woman’s only particles
And every man’s a wave.
We’re walking through the dust cloud
Of the love we make.
The rules of metaphysical attraction
Stay the same.
If you’re a shooting star
I can return to grace.

Over and over again.
Track Name: no promises
Standing on the corner,
Blinded by the sun,
Waiting for the lights to change
For everyone.

She must be in slow-motion,
But isn’t that a smile?
She doesn’t seem so far away
In summertime.

Will it be long?
No promises.

Everyone’s a stranger
Looking for a friend.
Open up your heart
And free yourself again.

We must be in slow motion
But is it such a shame?
You never seem that far from me:
Let’s celebrate.

Will it be long?
No promises.
Track Name: one or two
One or two things we’ve said lately
Been running through my brain.
If we don’t get the record straight
Things might never be the same.
If you knew what I’ve been thinking
Would you walk away?

All of this is so familiar
But I’ve been wrong before.
I find myself in deeper water;
Did I fall overboard?
If I knew what you’ve been thinking
Could I swim back to the shore?

If I say what I’ve been thinking
Am I going to spoil it all?

One or two more days without you
Whispering in my ear.
Whichever hand I use to count on
The answer’s still not clear.
I think it must be one or two.
Track Name: lay me down
And so I lay me down to sleep.
I’m tired,
So tired,
I'm tired:
The world keeps telling me what I can dream.
And so I’ll fall right here at your feet.
You’re all that matters to me.

And so I lay me down to sleep.
I’m tired,
So tired,
I’m tired:
The world keeps telling me what I should dream.
And so I’ll come back home to your street.
You’re all that matters to me.
Track Name: revolution's over
If the revolution’s over, who won?
And whose side was I supposed to be on?
If the revolution’s dead, was I better off red?
Am I still allowed to ask these questions?
Am I still allowed to think you’re wrong?

If there’s no power to the people
Then why do we pretend to let the people decide?
If there’s no power in a dream
Will you please let me sleep?
Am I such a fool to dream of freedom?
Am I such a fool to think you’re wrong?

We can’t go on
Lying to ourselves while dropping bombs.
Aren’t those days gone?
step out of the war room baby
Say goodbye,
Wave goodbye to all that.

Am I still allowed to ask these questions?
Am I still allowed to think you’re wrong?
If the revolution’s over, who won?
And whose side was I supposed to be on?
